PHOTO OPPS: Las Vegas children with and without disabilities drawing the playground of their dreams.
WHAT: Children from Palabra Viva Las Vegas will put their imaginations to work to help design the playground of their dreams during the  American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) 16th annual Safe and Accessible Playground Design Day. The afternoon event will be packed with interactive exercises to share concepts regarding their ideal play space. In partnership with KaBOOM!—a national non-profit dedicated to bringing play to kids who need it most—the children’s designs will shape the final design concept for a one-day playground build on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, kicking off the 2015 AAOS Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.

Palabra Viva Las Vegas is a church community providing services as well as educational, charitable and recreational programming to more than 1,500 Spanish-speaking adults and children each week.
Since 2000, the AAOS has sponsored a one-day volunteer build to kick-off its Annual Meeting, leaving behind a legacy of safe and accessible playgrounds to the Annual Meeting’s host cities so that children with and without disabilities can play safely together. The 2015 Annual Meeting will be held at the Venetian/Sands EXPO during March 24-28. This build will be the Academy’s second Safe and Accessible Playground build in the Las Vegas area.
  • 20-30 children and 20-30 parents from Palabra Viva Las Vegas;
  • AAOS spokespersons Drs. Hugh L. Bassewitz, Michael L. Lee, and Abdi Raissi, local orthopaedic surgeons and members of the Nevada Orthopaedic Society; and
  • Project manager from KaBOOM!
WHERE: Palabra Viva Las Vegas, 3415 S. Mojave Rd., Las Vegas, Nevada
WHEN: Thursday, December 11, 2014
3:00 PM – Site Walk-Through
4:00 PM – Children’s Drawing Session
5:00-7:30 PM – Adults’ Planning & Volunteer Workshop
WHY: Orthopaedic surgeons are physicians who treat many people with physical disabilities. They see first-hand the fractures, dislocations and other results of playground injuries and falls. The Safe and Accessible Playground Build is a rewarding opportunity for orthopaedic surgeons to give back to their Annual Meeting’s host city. This playground will offer children exercise opportunities for balance, flexibility and strength to build strong bones as well as a safe and accessible place to play.
